Woodcraft Folk are working on a new project with Peer Action Collective. The Peer Action Collective seeks to support 10 to 25-year-olds to contribute to community activities designed to help young people live a life free from violence. The innovative collective is funded by the Youth Endowment Fund, the #iwill Fund (a joint investment between The National Lottery Community Fund and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport) and the Co-op Group. Find out more about the Peer Action Collective (PAC) here.

We are looking to build a team of enthusiastic peer facilitators (age 18+) who will be paid to deliver workshops to young people across the UK emphasising and raising awareness about the importance of cooperation and how they can use cooperative values in their social action projects and every day life. We will be delivering 14 sessions over 2024-2025 to groups of young people (changemakers) across England.

Cooperative values include democracy, self-help, self-responsibility, equity, ethical values, solidarity and equality, all things that we explore at Woodcraft Folk through games, drama activities, discussions, debates and outdoor activities.

Groups of Changemakers will be made up of young people from a range of different organisations across the country and will be groups who are looking to make change in their local areas including eradicating youth violence, supporting School refusers, mental health and stopping discrimination in their areas

Woodcraft Folk’s young facilitators will be supporting regional groups to explore how to adopt a co-operative approach to their work. Those with some life experience of social action and facing barriers such as violence, care experience, school refusal, mental health difficulties etc. would be most welcome to express interest as these are some of the topics the changemakers will be exploring through their social action projects.

A training and preparation event is scheduled for February 2nd-4th at Cudham. During the weekend we will work together to produce tools and session plans to support Social Action Leads and Changemakers to develop, deliver and evaluate their social action projects.

What are we looking for?
  • Enthusiastic about cooperative values
  • Some life experience of social action
  • Confident to present, support and deliver workshops to groups of up to 40 people (in a team)
  • Collaborative and good at working within a team
  • Creative
  • Experience of Woodcraft Folk and our aims and principles
  • Age 18+
  • We would particularly welcome applications from those with a lived experience of being in a minority, living in a deprived area, diverse background or experiencing violence
When do I need to be available?

2-4 February 2024 at Cudham

Available for specific sessions (Facilitators will sign up for them and probably lead 1-2 sessions each in pairs) from April 2024 – September 2025.

What will we do at the Cudham training event?

Join us for a residential weekend of training and workshop co-creation. During the weekend we will work together to produce tools and session plans to support Social Action Leads and Changemakers to develop, deliver and evaluate their social action projects.

Do Peer Facilitators get paid to deliver sessions?

Peer Facilitators will be paid travel expenses for the Cudham training weekend. For the session delivery there will be a day rate paid to Peer Facilitators.

How do I sign up?

Please fill in our Expression of interest form to give us more information about yourself and why you are interested to be part of this project. Once filled in, you will receive more information about the next steps of the project and an invitation to the Cudham training weekend.

Over 2021 – 2022 Woodcraft Folk has received funding from the Coop #Iwill bereavement fund to support creation of a resource that will help youth workers, group leaders and young people navigate the often unknown experience of grief and bereavement.

We have worked with volunteer group leaders and young people within our organisation as well as working closely with youth workers and young people from our partner organisation The Kite Trust (TKT). The Kite Trust are a youth organisation based in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough who support young people from the LGBT+ community.

Throughout this project we have also worked really closely with Cass Humphries-Massey, a  Thanatologist, who is somebody who researches and works with grief and bereavement.
Cass HM is the founder of Navigating the Wilderness, a practice in which they tend the wilds of grief. Cass has helped our team of youth workers from both organisations understand the subject better and supported us to develop the ideas of our young members into a meaningful and useful resource. Cass has helped our team of youth workers from both organisations understand the subject better and supported us to develop the ideas of our young members into a meaningful and useful resource.

what we have done

Authorship of this toolkit sits between a number of authors engaged in a process of
co-production from initial conception to publication. We have met with young people across London, Cambridge and Peterborough who have participated in workshops and consultations to develop artwork and content for the toolkit. They have shared their own experiences of bereavement and of supporting others.

Some authors have chosen to be named, and some have chosen to remain anonymous. We want to thank all of the authors of this toolkit, including all of our young people, volunteers, and members of each organisation involved.

We believe young people, and all people, can benefit from openly, creatively and compassionately sharing spaces to navigate grief. We hope you notice ripples of support stemming from the work contained within this toolkit. We believe this work can reach far beyond the pages we have co-produced and authored here, and we encourage anybody with ideas, connections and resources available for this work to get in touch.

“E-mpACT: Youth for inclusive e-education” is a three-year project focusing on addressing the youth needs during and post covid-19 pandemic, addressing digitalization, non-formal education and international solidarity. E-mpACT aims to raise awareness in youth work by examining the pandemic’s impact on non-formal education and international solidarity.

Participants of this project are analysing the social impact and youth worker’s perceptions of the challenges of digital literacy, to advocate for an accessible youth work in relation to the pandemic and solidarity policy with neighbouring countries of the EU and different regions in the world.

This project wants to ensure that future policies on digitalization consider the specific needs and aspirations of young people from marginalized communities, and address challenges and barriers they face in active e-participation. E-mpACT involves young people/youth partners from 8 countries and 4 continents and is being led by IFM-SEI.

The project so far

In May 2022 the project saw a Kick off meeting at Woodcraft Folk’s Cudham Centre which involved in-depth planning of the overall project goals and outputs with participants from Woodcraft Folk and international partners. Participants came together to further their learning about the project at Common Ground international camp in August 2022.

Young participants and project officers took part in E-learning during September 2022 which looked at the impact the pandemic had on youth work and what engagement with online youth work participants have had. We explored the positive and negative impact online youth work has had across the world.

In October 2022, 2 young participants from Woodcraft Folk joined international counter parts in Slovenia for workshops around ‘what makes the perfect trainer?’ looking at online and offline qualities of different methods of facilitation and what resources trainers need to be the best trainers. The group also discussed digital activism and promoting causes through certain platforms such as Tik Tok, Instagram, Twitter etc.

In November, another 2 young participants and our ESC comms volunteer took part in a co-design workshop in Berlin focusing on how to undertake research on and offline and different techniques to do this. Woodcraft Folk participant Lilith (17) said at the end of the trip “I didn’t know anything about research, now I have a pretty good understanding”.

Over 2023 the project continued to explore different ways of delivering youth work. In April Young Leader Training took place at Woodcraft Folk’s Heightgate Centre. We brought young leaders age 18-25 to engage with an introduction to safeguarding/risk assessment, participate in workshops around digital youth work, take part in mental health and physical first aid training as well as this participants share skills and look at the basics of being a leader. Find out more about the weekend here.

In December 2023 participants from Woodcraft Folk and the other project partner organisations traveled to Zimbabwe to develop an educational toolkit full of information and activities around digital and online youth work.

Upcoming project activity

2024 will see each project partner develop a policy paper on a subject they will continue work on. In July a seminar will take place in Peru focusing on Advocacy and Capacity building. The end of the year will see roundtables organised by Woodcraft Folk to bring together other organisations and projects focusing on recovery of youth work and supporting young people’s mental health after COVID.

Check out the E-mpACT toolkit which has been developed by project partners focusing on impactful online and digital youth work here.

IFM-SEI Shaping the Future! (11.8.25-18.08.25)

Papers for all or no papers at all!?

We live in a world where borders are not just lines on a map, but walls that separate dreams, people and rights. Migration is not just a “political issue”; it is the reality of millions of people seeking to survive, resist and find a place to be free. This Summer School proposes a space to understand the structural causes of migration, challenge systemic racism and explore alternatives from an approach of social justice and international solidarity.

In this year’s Summer School, we will look at migration and all the issues and challenges around it. We will not only explore the circumstances that might cause people to migrate but also look at the situations they might be faced with in the places they migrated to. Bringing together people from all over the world, we will share experiences from our fight against racism and xenophobia in all their forms. Looking to the future we will discuss how we can bring about a world free of so-called “border crises”, where everyone can go and live where they want to, how they want to.

The programme is developed by the International Team of Kurt Löwenstein Education Centre. We will work in track-sessions every day. But we will leave plenty of time per day for other parts of the programme participants self-organise, with the help of the International Team, but also themselves. In committees we organise our free time and evenings. We will have time to share workshops also participants bring with them and spend one day on a field trip in Berlin. Much more will develop and happen.

The seminar will be conducted in English; thus, it will be rather hard to understand the instructions and fully participate if your English is limited. However, you may help each other out in delegations.

How do I apply for international opportunities?

Every project is slightly different, information on this page should hold how to apply. The usual routes are either through Woodcraft Folk by contacting lauren@woodcraft.org.uk or directly through the partner organisation e.g. IFM-SEI. If applications are direct, links should appear with the opportunities above

Do I have to pay to take part in an international activity?

Most international opportunities have a participation fee. This can range from £50 – £200 for most events. You will most likely find out about the participant fee on this page or during the registration process. Please do get in touch with Woodcraft Folk if you feel that finances are a barrier to participate as we can arrange payment plans and speak to our partners about fees.

How is travel organised?

There is often a travel budget for each activity which should cover travel to and from the event. Depending on the project and activity either you will arrange your own travel and claim back from the hosting organisation or Woodcraft Folk will arrange travel with you and reclaim the funds centrally.

Do I need a passport to take part in international activities?

yes, to travel outside of the UK for an international event or activity you must have a valid passport. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 3 months (in some cases 6 months) after your arrival in the country.

How are participants chosen?

Where spaces for events are limited, criteria for selection will vary from project to project, but may include relevant skills, interests and lived experiences, as well as giving priority, where possible, to those who have not participated in previous international projects with Woodcraft Folk
